IXL and MyBlee Math

As a school, we are trying to have our students develop more proficient math skills. I am leaving it as an option for students to either choose IXL or MyBlee Math to develop better skills.

MyBlee Math can be downloaded on your tablet/iPad via: http://www.myblee.info/us/applications/myblee-math

I highly recommend MyBlee Math as it is more interactive, has rewards and trophies that the student can collect and covers the curriculum well. It is an American app but it teaches fairly similar math concepts as the Canadian curriculum. Also, it is also advised that students sign up for both Grade 3 and Grade 4 so that they can polish their Grade 3 skills.

Spelling Routine

The very first spelling unit has been sent out!

Students are expected to work on each unit individually by themselves. They should use the strategies that were discussed in class should they be stuck on certain sections.
These strategies consist of:

  • using the dictionary (book/mobile device/internet)
  • searching online
  • last resort is to ask parents

There are usually around 20 words for students to study. I will select 10 of the 20 for each test. Please ensure that students are doing their job by studying words each night and being prepared for Friday. The worksheets that go along with the list words are to be handed in every Friday (unless we have a short week).

First spelling test is on: September 18

Welcome to Grade 4 (2015-2016)

Am I ever excited to work with this new group of kiddos! I can almost imagine how many fun things we'll do, the adventures we'll go on and the cool things we'll get to try out.

Mom's and dads, please fill out the student information sheet, volunteer sheet and milk, and return to school as soon as possible.

It's good to be back into routine and learning lots!

Just FYI, I will try my very best to update the blog at least once a week. I just can't wait to have the opportunity to chat with you. Homework will start piling this week, so don't think that it's going to be a breeze this first week.

Please do not hesitate to call me, drop by, or email me if you have any questions, concerns or comments! I look forward to working with you and your child. I envision a flourishing year filled with many learning opportunities!

Here's to learning in the sun doing some math, and making every moment challenging (math.... what are you thinking!)

Learning Fair: Design an Instrument Project

Design an Instrument
Objective

Design an original instrument using unconventional materials, something that you have not seen done before and can make different sounds/notes. Your instrument must use at least one of these methods: plucking, blowing or striking. Consider your materials based on stability, strength, sound-proofing, insulation and reflectivity.

We will be doing most work at school. There will be a planning process and a writing process that will all be done at school (unless students are not using time well). The building process will have to be done at home due to time and building material reasons.

There will be a detailed schedule to follow in the next few days regarding what process will be done at school. It will be the students responsibility to have their designs mapped out in their minds for designated planning days. Please help create conversations at home regarding this activity as your child may need your helpful brain to support them.

A package of the assignment will be going out this week at school. Do not hesitate to email me should you have any questions regarding the assignment.

Learning Fair Date Changed

Please be advised that Learning Fair has been moved to April 22. More details to come regarding time.

Parents,
We will be working on animal research reports at school. I have attached a mini-version of what your child will be working on at school. You can help by looking up information with your child on websites and reading books about their animal with them. They should read what they can but some resources may not be on their reading level. Students will do the writing portion at school and will also have the option of working on a poster or a PowerPoint. Also, if you have access to a printer (or magazines) for pictures that your child could bring to school that would be fabulous. This should be a fun, beginning, research project! I can’t wait to see how the students do!

Multiplication Facts

It's that time! We need to work on our multiplication facts at home, at school, in the car, in the shower... you name it! We're going full force crazy for multiplication. Please practice with flash cards, playing cards, numbers you see at the grocery store.

We have made it a goal in our class to master 0 times table to 10 times table. If the whole class masters these facts, we will be throwing an ice cream party! So parents, help them out!

Multiplication facts will be necessary for 2-3 digit multiplication by 1 digit. In the curriculum, we are expected to memorize products up to 25. So game on, bring on the multiplication!
